Jailed: hammer attacker who tried to kill in broad daylight
The attack happened in High Street, Kington, when the area was busy with shoppers, police have said.
An attacker who tried to hit his victim over the head with a hammer has been jailed for 18 years.
Alexander Stone launched the unprovoked attack in broad daylight in Kington, in the north of the county, but shoppers intervened.
The victim was physically injured thanks to their involvement before police arrived in High Street, but he was convicted of attempted murder.
West Mercia Police said it was pleased with the significant sentenced handed to Stone, 38 and of Bridge Street in Kington.
A spokesperson said without the bravery of shoppers, the outcome for the victim “could have been very different”.
DC Leah Lowe, the officer in charge of the case, said: “The victim has shown immense courage and I’d like to commend her on her bravery and conduct during the whole process.
“I’d also like to thank the members of the public at the scene who intervened.
“Their bravery was incredible, and their quick actions prevented the incident becoming even more serious.
“I know this was an extremely distressing incident for the public to witness, especially in a small, rural town like Kington, and I’d like to thank the local community for their support and help throughout our investigation.
“I hope the sentence provides some reassurance that we take violence very seriously and are committed to keeping our local areas safe, and taking action against those who threaten that.”
