Coventry most prepared city for net zero plans outside of London

A new study has revealed Coventry as the fourth most prepared city for the government's zero emission plans of 2035.

The research conducted by motor trade insurance experts One Sure Insurance analysed the number of EV chargers within each city, and the number of vehicles registered to identify which cities are most prepared for the government guidelines.

The government has announced that manufacturers of new zero-emission cars will be required to increase their production by a certain percentage each year until 2035.

By the year 2030, 80% of all new cars sold will need to be electric.

These new regulations will require cities and towns to prepare for an increase in demand for electric charging stations.

Coventry has 351 charging points available for every 100,000 vehicles - the most anywhere in the country outside of London.

Coventry City Councillor Jim O’Boyle says he's proud that the city is on its way to being greener, and there are several major projects taking place to support the country's move to net zero.

He said: "I’m very proud that Coventry is well on its way to being a net zero city in the very near future. We have a lot of projects in the works to help support the city remove its dependence on fossil fuels. We have many electric vehicle charge points. To be rated 4th in the country, just behind London, proves how important we deem this to be. The automotive sector is going all electric, so cars in the not-so-distant future will all be electric. Its very important Coventry has these facilities, so people can get around.

"On top of that, Coventry is going to have an all-electric bus city by 2025. All our busses will be electric, the only city in the country to do that by 2025. We’re also leading the development of a Very Light Rail system, which will be completely net zero as well, and run by electric without overhead wires. There are plans for a solar farm in Coventry, helping to decarbonise homes across the city. And we’re decarbonising many of our public buildings. And of course we're putting in a lot of cycle lanes. So Coventry is well on its way to help support the country’s move to net zero."
