The heart of Coventry city centre is all set to play host to the world premiere of a show that will bring acrobatics, aerialists and plenty of colour to a packed weekend of events as Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture reaches its final days.

The Awakening, by the French company Gratte Ciel, will take place in Broadgate on Friday 13 May and, again, on Saturday 14 May.

Audiences for the 40-minute show will be treated to aerial stunts hanging from a giant dream catcher.

There will also be highly acrobatics alongside music and dance after opening with artists on sway poles that will wow the crowd.

Coventry City of Culture Trust producer Josie Bamford said:

“We are so excited to bring The Awakening to Broadgate for its premiere as part of a truly massive weekend of celebratory festival events for the whole city.

“We’re encouraging people to get their tickets now because this event is proving to be really popular and is going to be a truly memorable spectacle for everyone who witnesses it live in Broadgate.

“Gratte Ciel specialises in aerial spectaculars full of acrobatics, colour and music and we are so excited to present the World Premiere of The Awakening right in the heart of Coventry.

“We can’t wait to see it.”

Originating from Arles in France, Gratte Ciel has presented shows around the world - from Montreal to Stockholm, and Buenos Aires to Adelaide.

The Awakening forms part of a huge weekend of celebration as the UK’s first permanent immersive digital art gallery, The Reel Store will open at the Coventry Telegraph Hotel on Friday, 13 May.

This is the City a free parade showcasing the people and the stories of Coventry 2021 will take to the streets of the city centre on the afternoon of Saturday, 14 May.

On Sunday, 15 May, Our Wilder Family, a spectacular artist-led drone show inspired by the movements of flocks of birds, will take to the skies above the city at War Memorial Park.
