Bin lorry drivers in Coventry are starting a two day strike this morning (Wednesday), over pay and festive working conditions.

It's despite the city council calling on the Unite Union to halt the industrial action.

They say planned talks yesterday (Tuesday) to try and prevent the strike did not take place.

Four days of walkouts are planned for next week as well.

There are now six drop off sites open in the city for residents to go and drop off their waste

The council released a statement, saying they're 'committed to talking with all parties to resolve this situation'.

Previously, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said:

“You might expect a Labour council to be sympathetic to the low-pay plight of its bin drivers. But instead of a willingness to find a way, it’s been total intransigence from the council, combined with social media tirades against their own workers.

“They even seem to think they can dictate how and when our members can take legal action. They’re wrong about that as well.

"So Unite will defend the jobs, pay and conditions of our striking refuse drivers to the hilt.”
