Couple jailed after beating and robbing man in Coventry
Henry Angus and Claire Birch followed the man back from a shop last year
A couple have been jailed for robbing a man in Coventry, after they followed him back to his house and beat him, before stealing his money.
Henry Angus and Claire Birch followed the 66-year-old back from a shop in the city in August last year.
The pair took his bank cards and demanded his PIN. Birch punched the man in the face while Angus used the man’s own kitchen knife to threaten him.
They also cut the wires of his telephone so he couldn’t call out for help, before leaving and withdrawing money from his account.
A witness saw the couple leave the flat and when he questioned them on why they were there - they pretended they were friends with the man.
After watching CCTV, police identified the couple, who were not known to the victim, and they were arrested the following day.
The man has died since this incident following an unrelated illness.
Angus, 58 and Birch, 29, both of Upper Spon Street, Coventry pleaded guilty to robbery at Warwickshire Justice Centre and on Tuesday 8 March they were sentenced to eight and seven and a half years respectively
Detective Constable Mel Oldershaw, from Force CID, said: “I’m really pleased to see this couple jailed for this robbery.
“This was an attack on a vulnerable man who was unable to defend himself and they made sure he couldn’t call anyone for help.
“I hope this result brings the victim’s family some closure, in what has been a really difficult few months for them all.”
