Police confirm Birmingham arson caused by cigarette

The force have thanked officer who bravely ran into the building to help people.

Police in Birmingham have confirmed a suspected arson in the city was caused by a discarded cigarette.

Officers patrolling the area were the first on the scene on Villa Road, Lozells, just before midnight on Sunday.

They ran into the building, ensuring it was evacuated, and saved two people helped to safety.

Officers were checked by paramedics at the scene - with one going to hospital for further checks for smoke inhilation.

Providing an update on their website today, West Midlands Police say:

"Following further enquiries, we now believe the fire may have been started by a cigarette discarded next to the flats.

"Thanks for all your messages of support for our officers, who bravely ran into the building to help people out."
