Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault that took place in Bedworth park over the weekend.

The incident happened shortly before 2.30pm on Sunday (13 August) when a group of around three girls are alleged to have pushed the victim to the ground in Newdigate recreation ground.

The victim - a woman in her late 80s - suffered injuries to her head, shoulder and hands, and was taken to hospital for treatment where she remains.

Detective Sergeant Magnus Mcauley from Nuneaton CID said: “This was an unprovoked attack on an elderly woman, which I recognise will cause great concern to the local community.

"Police acted quickly and I can confirm that a female was arrested yesterday afternoon (Sunday) on suspicion of assault - GBH.

"The investigation is ongoing at this stage but there is no wider threat to the public at this time.

"Residents can expect to see a heightened police presence while our officers conduct their enquiries – please do come and talk to one them if you have any concerns or information that could help.

“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or was in the park at around the time of the incident who may have seen something suspicious, to please get in touch as any information, no matter how small, could really help with our investigation.”
