Arrest after two police officers punched in Rugby

The officers were responding to a reported assault when it happened

A man has been arrested after two police officers reported being punched in the head in Rugby.

The officers were called out to an assault on High Street in the early hours of Sunday and, whilst detaining a suspect, were assaulted themselves.

A 29-year-old man from Rugby was arrested on suspicion of assaulting emergency workers and assault. He was later bailed while enquiries continue.

Warwickshire Police have confirmed none of the officers were seriously injured.

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said: "Two officers reported being punched in the head in the early hours of Sunday morning while detaining a suspect in connection with an assault in High Street, Rugby. A 29-year-old man from Rugby was arrested on suspicion of assaulting emergency workers and assault. He was later bailed while enquiries continue."
