Man allegedly beaten unconscious in Birmingham
The nightclub licence is under review

A man was left in a coma after being allegedly restrained and knocked unconscious with a metal security barrier by door staff at an LGBT+ nightclub in Birmingham.
The alleged incident took place earlier this month (October) outside Glamorous on Hurst Street in the Chinese Quarter. A police report says two door staff detained and restrained the man on the floor, while a third struck him with a metal crowd barrier, knocking him unconscious.
The male was taken to hospital and placed in an induced coma. Three security guards were arrested but released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.
Glamorous describes itself as ‘a booming and energetic venue catering to any age’ featuring award-winning international drag acts. The Birmingham venue is one of three across the country and is open until the early hours ‘to keep the party going for those that want to dance the night away’.
Reopened in November of 2015 after being closed for over a year, Glamorous was previously known as Glamorous Show Bar, Trishas, and XLs. Glamorous has continued to be a popular and vibrant venue in Birmingham’s gay village.
At a Birmingham City Council licensing meeting today, city chiefs met to discuss interim steps. The nightclub has been ordered to hire a new security team, the designated premises supervisor is to be removed, and management will have control over security while the club is open.
Sarah Clover, a barrister speaking on behalf of Glamorous’ licence holder, said there had been no other incidents at the Birmingham venue since 2018.
She added that licence holder Matthew Eason is reporting ‘serious challenges’ on Birmingham streets in the night-time economy, and that police resources are very stretched.
The club in Birmingham city centre is one of three Glamorous venues across the country.
Before the meeting took place, licence holder Mr Eason had agreed to remove and replace the designated premises supervisor. Mark Swallow of West Midlands Police said he was impressed with the venue’s attempts to mitigate the situation.
The council will meet again within 28 days to discuss the case further and consider any permanent options.
