Russia banned from participating in the Eurovision Song Contest
Several broadcasters had threatened to boycott the Contest
Organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest have chosen to ban Russia from participating at the upcoming edition in May.
The decision by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) was taken following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Thursday (February 24th).
As a result, Russia will no longer participate in the competition, which is due to be held in the Italian city of Turin in May.
In a statement, the EBU said that the inclusion of a Russian participant in the Contest would tarnish the reputation of the event.
"The decision reflects concern that, in light of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine, the inclusion of a Russian entry in this year's Contest would bring the competition into disrepute" they said.
"We remain dedicated to protecting the values of a cultural competition which promotes international exchange and understanding, brings audiences together, celebrates diversity through music and unites Europe on one stage."
Several countries including Finland and Estonia had threatened to boycott the event if organisers allowed Russia to compete. Other countries including the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway also expressed concern.
International organisations have been under fire to expel Russia following its military intervention in neighbouring Ukraine.
Russian military forces entered the country on Thursday morning with sporadic shelling and bombing across Ukraine's major cities - including the capital, Kyiv.
In a recorded statement, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK would 'not look away' from the war and offer support however they could.
