Luton Town have secured promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic win on penalties against Coventry City.

Spot kicks were needed after the Championship play-off final ended 1-1 at Wembley Stadium.

It secures an incredible comeback over the years for the Hatters, who ended up in non-league football after being given a 30 point deduction at the start of the 2008/2009 campaign.

Going into the game, fans of Luton Town were gearing up for the most historic match in the club's history.

However, many remained cautious of the potential the team had following tight matches against Sunderland that pushed the team through on aggregate.

The Hatters started strong, with a goal-line scramble pushing the ball into the net in the fifth minute - but it was ruled offside by the linesman.

However, moments after, captain Tom Lockyer was forced off due to an injury after clashing with Gustavo Hamer. Reece Burke replaced him.

Luton's goal for Luton came following a skilful run from Elijah Adebayo who was able to find Jordan Clark in the box - who put the ball past Ben Wilson. But this was counteracted in the second half by a goal from Gustavo Hamer.

The Hatters had a few other chances in the game, including a goal being disallowed for a handball - after being cleared by Coventry defender Callum Doyle in the first half.

The game remained deadlocked after 90 minutes and the game was taken to extra time.

After 30 additional minutes, nothing separated the two sides and the game was to be decided by penalties.

The Hatters won the game after a penalty shootout, which ended 6 - 5.

Following their win, the team have won an estimated £100,000 for reaching the play-off final. This is brought in through valuable TV rights to watch the match, together with ticket prices as well as other sponsorships.
