Police in Lancashire have launched a murder investigation following a fatal stabbing at a property in Colne.

Officers first received reports of an incident taking place at a house on New Market Street in the town just before 2:30p.m. on Sunday afternoon (March 31st).

Emergency services were called to the property to provide medical treatment to the man, but he sadly died a short time later.

Investigators are now able to name the victim as 34-year-old Richard Chamberlain, who was from Colne.

A post-mortem is being carried out on Monday (April 1st) to establish the formal cause of Chamberlain's death.

A 44-year-old man from Colne was arrested by officers on suspicion of murder, and currently remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Jill Riley from Lancashire Police's Force Major Investigation team paid tribute to Richard following his death.

"First and foremost my thoughts are with Richard’s loved ones at this difficult time," she said in a statement.

"We have a dedicated team of investigators conducting enquiries to get justice for Richard," she added.

"As part of these enquiries, we are asking anyone who saw or heard a disturbance or anything suspicious, in the area of New Market Street yesterday afternoon to make contact with us. I would also ask people to check their dashcam, doorbell or CCTV footage to see if they have captured anything which could help our investigation."

Ms Riley added that they believed that the incident was isolated and insisted there would be no wider threat to the public.

Anyone who might have any information into Richard's death or the incident itself can get in touch with Lancashire Police by calling 101, quoting incident reference number 640 on March 31st.
