Greater Manchester's Mayor has been fined and had six penalty points put on his licence for speeding on a smart motorway last summer.

Andy Burnham's admitted he was "going too fast" when he was caught doing 78mph in a 40mph zone on the M62 on the 7th July last year.

The Labour politician said a closure of junction 10, which he normally used to exit the motorway, had forced him to suddenly change his usual route home to Golborne in Wigan.

He said he only found out about the variable speed limit in place at the time "when the letter arrived in the post".

Mr Burnham added: "If I had been aware, I would not have been travelling at that speed.

"That said, I acknowledge that, at 78mph, I was going too fast and accept the court's decision."

He's been ordered to pay almost £2000 in fines, charges and costs.

He was also given six penalty points on his licence after accepting the single speeding offence.
