Google reveals the most searched people of 2021

Footballers, broadcasters and actors have made the list

Google have released the names of the most searched people in the UK in the past twelve months.

As part of their Year in Search review of 2021, Google have unveiled who the nation was searching for throughout the year.

Some of the people who have made the listen have been involved in music, film, sports and TV, showing the range of events getting the nation talking.

So, without further ado, these are the most searched people on Google in the past year.

These were the most Googled people of 2021:

1. Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen topped the list and became the most Googled person in the UK in 2021. The Denmark footballer collapsed in the middle of an international match between Denmark and Finland during the Euro 2020 Championships. The BBC received 6,000 from showing footage of Eriksen receiving CPR as stunned fans watched on.

2. Matt Hancock

Finishing in second place is former Health Secretary Matt Hancock. After having lead the country through the first three waves of coronavirus, Hancock resigned from his job after being found to have broken social distancing rules to have an affair with his aide Gina Coladangelo. He was replaced by Sajid Javid, the current Health Secretary.

3. Emma Raducanu

Eighteen-year-old Emma Raducanu shot to fame in the summer after finishing fourth at Wimbledon, her first major tennis tournament. She added to her success after winning the US Open in September. She received much praise from the Queen and Prime Minister Boris Johnson for her success.

4. Piers Morgan

Controversial broadcaster Piers Morgan made it to fourth position on the most Googled people in the UK in 2021. The presenter was involved in several scandals in the early months of the year, ending in Morgan leaving his job as host of Good Morning Britain. The resignation came from backlash he received after making comments about the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

5. Alec Baldwin

Actor and director Alec Baldwin shot into the news after firing a gun on a film set. Believing the gun to be a prop, the gun accidentally misfired and shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The case is currently ongoing and Baldwin has denied intentionally shooting the woman.

6. Travis Scott

American rapper Travis Scott hit the headlines when a festival he hosted - Astroworld - resulted in the deaths of ten people, some of which were children. There had been accusations of overselling tickets in order to make more money. Scott is currently facing lawsuits from the families of those killed in the crush.

7. Cristiano Ronaldo

Portuguese footballer Ronaldo hit the headlines after moving to Manchester United from his former club Juventus. Following the move, football sales of Ronaldo's number 7 shirt set an all-time record during the transfer.

8. Jack Grealish

England footballer Jack Grealish also was one of the most Googled people in the UK in 2021. As part of the team that took England to its first international final since 1966, Grealish attracted attention after drinking from cups thrown at him at a Euro 2020 match in Hungary. As well as this, Grealish donated £5,000 to the family of a woman who died in a car crash in Liverpool.

9. Tyson Fury

Boxer Tyson Fury also was one of the most Googled people in the UK in the past 12 months. The sportsman was able to retain his title as Heavyweight Champion of the World after defeating Deontay Wilder at a match in Las Vegas. As well as this, Fury has been open about his mental health and advocated for better mental health services.

10. Ashley Cain

Rounding out the top 10 of the most Googled people in the UK in 2021 is former footballer and reality star Ashley Cain. In April, Cain's eight-month-old child Azaylia passed away due to leukaemia, despite raising nearly £1.5 million for her care. Following her death, Cain and his wife Safiyya Vorajee set up a foundation in her name to help other children facing cancer.
