Fife was one of the final councils to declare and, like so many before, voted no.

Scotlands third biggest council was destined to have a say in the results, and voters polled 139, 788 votes for No at 55.05% Yes came in at 44.95% with 114,148.

Counting officer Steve Grimmond started proceedings in the Michael Wood Sports and Leisure Centre in Glenrothes after 10pm, as postal votes started to be counted.

After that, there was the slow trickle of black ballot boxes to the 36 counting tables.

Better Together seemed the the happier of those croweded into the sports hall of the leisure centre, while the Yes campaigners looked on at the counting tables.

The final result was declared shortly after 6am.
