Boy dies after falling into canal in Burnley

A teenage boy has died after falling into the canal in Burnley.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the Leeds-Liverpool canal on Empire Way at around 4.20 on Saturday. Despite the best efforts of crews, the body of the 16 year old was pulled from the water a few hours later.

Lancashire Police have now launched an investigation, saying enquiries are ongoing.

In a statement, the force said: "We were called to Empire Way, Burnley, at 4.20pm today to reports that a teenage boy had entered the water in the Leeds and Liverpool canal.

"The emergency services attended, and a search was undertaken of the canal and surrounding area.

"Very sadly at approximately 7.17pm, a body was recovered from the water.

"A 16-year-old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this distressing time."
