South Wales Police attending a serious assault in Aberfan say a 29 year old woman has been stabbed.

Emergency services were called just before 09:10 this morning to Moy Road.

The woman was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff for treatment.

It's thought her injuries are not life threatening at this stage.

Police say the suspect left the scene immediately after the incident and enquiries are ongoing to find him.

A search of the immediate area is being carried out by armed officers.

Local schools and childcare providers are currently in lockdown whilst the incident is ongoing.

Police are asking people to avoid the area.

A statement from Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council said: "A number of schools and childcare settings are in a precautionary lockdown, in response to an ongoing incident.

We are advising the community to follow the guidelines from South Wales Police at this time."
