It's half term!
Last updated 30th Oct 2017
Half term is here and cash-strapped parents across the Scotland will be wondering how they are going to keep the kids entertained during the school holidays. Here thanks to Voucherbox we have some great ideas for families on a budget for exploring Edinburgh.
A royal affair
Home to over 1,000 years of history, Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline of this spectacular Scottish city. Why not explore the castle dungeons and get up close and personal with the historic Crown Jewels?
If you’re a bit of a thrill seeker then make sure you’re around to see Mons Meg, a cannon capable of blasting ammunition for as far as two miles, do its daily 1 o’clock blast!
Average entrance cost for a family of four: £54.40
On the busses
If you’re heading to Edinburgh on a rainy day then a City Sight Seeing hop-on-hop-off bus is a great way to see the city whilst staying dry. Enjoy the 14-stop tour which will show you landmarks, such as Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat. As you travel the kids can enjoy a fun and freaky Horrible History audio tour on the headphones provided.
Starting ticket costs for a family of four: £45
Treasure hunters
If you’re on a budget, but looking to explore Edinburgh, then we recommend you take part in a self-guided treasure hunt through Treasure Trail.
By downloading a PDF following a quick online payment, you and the family will be encouraged to work together to spot and solve the clues on a 1.75-mile route taking you to famous plaques, buildings and monuments all over Edinburgh’s old town.
Download cost for a family of four: £6.99
Movie mania
If half term brings us one of those wet and windy days then why not treat the kids to a trip to the cinema? The Edinburgh Vue Cinema Omni Centre shows all the latest blockbusters in 2D or 3D at a competitive rate including the much-hyped Lego film, Lego Ninjago Movie.
Average entrance cost for a family of four: £33.96
Doom and gloom at the Edinburgh Dungeon
Experience the sights, sounds and - ahem - smells of Scotland’s medieval history at the Edinburgh Dungeon. This historic site offers 80 minutes of immersive theatre, both hilarious and terrifying all at once.
The site played host to some of the saltiest characters in Scotland’s history, including prolific killers and their torturous wardens. Their stories will be brought to life before your very eyes and trust us, they’re only for those with strong stomachs!
Meet a famous lineup of costumed characters like the ferocious witch, Agnes Finnie; the murderous duo, Burke and Hare and the infamous cannibal, Sawney Bean.
Average entrance cost for a family of four: £48 for a family four with two children under 15 in the morning, £62 for afternoon session.
