A woman has died following a fire at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh during the early hours of Thursday morning. Fire crews were called to the Royal Victoria Building at 2.28am. They helped staff evacuate 14 patients from the affected ward to another area of the hospital. Police said that a 75-year-old woman died as a result of the fire. A police spokesman said: "Investigations are at an early stage following the death of a 75-year-old woman at the Western General Hospital. "Officers attended after reports were received of a small fire in a room in one of the wards.'' Firefighters were at the scene for around two hours. No one else was injured. Police and the fire service will carry out an investigation to establish the cause of the blaze. The hospital is the same one where a patient was tested for Ebola yesterday after returning from West Africa. The patient tested negative.
