A1 closed in East Lothian as high winds sweep across Scotland

There's a warning to expect disruption on the transport network as high winds hit Scotland.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for wind until 9pm tonight.

The A1 has been closed between Haddington and Thistly Cross after lorries were blown over on the route during gales in December.

Traffic is being diverted along the adjacent A199.

Gusts of 50-60mph are likely and could top 70mph in some of the most exposed coastal and upland sites.

The weather warning covers Lothian and Borders, Fife, parts of Strathclyde, south-west Scotland, Moray and the Highlands and islands.

Police tweeted: "If driving a vehicle which may be vulnerable to being blown over in high winds, please exercise additional caution and plan your route to avoid exposed areas or consider delaying your journey until conditions improve.''

They advised people driving high-sided vehicles to avoid travelling on the A1 unless it was essential, and said motorists should allow extra time for their journey.

The Met Office warned that some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely while some short-term loss of power and other services is possible.
