Here's what you need to know ahead of teacher strikes in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk

Teachers across Scotland are set to go on strike this week.

That means a lot of disruption for parents and carers in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk - so here's what you need to know.

What's happening?

Strikes will take place across Tuesday the 10th of January and Wednesday the 11th.

First on Tuesday Primary School teachers will walk-out, followed the next day by their colleagues in secondary education.

This involves various unions, so is far reaching.

Members of the EIS, NASUWT, SSTA and the AHDS trade unions are taking part in the action in a dispute over pay.

Why it is happening?

Teachers are taking industrial action as they seek an improved pay offer.

Union members have previously rejected a 5% increase - even when the Scottish Government adjusted this offer to mean the lowest paid would receive more.

It's claimed many teachers are already struggling financially and that pay not meeting inflation has led to an exodus from the industry for some.

Alison Murphy, the Edinburgh representative for the EIS Union told Forth News: "Our pay has fallen massively behind where it was, so this isn't something that's just come out now.

"We're all seeing ourselves significantly poorer, as are so many people across the country.

"For over a decade now our pay has fallen further and further and further behind with compable professions, with other graduate professions.

"This has been impacting on schools for over a decade, we are seeing increasing retention problems, we are seeing people who joined the profession leaving after a few years because they can't get permeant contracts.

"As soon as they hit the top of the pay scale - and we hit the top of the pay scale very quickly in teaching - there is nowhere to go."

Tuesday:

On Tuesday it's the Primary schools which will be impacted.

In Edinburgh every Primary will shut for the day, including the following special schools: Kaimes, St Crispin, Braidburn, Oaklands, Redhall Primary, Rowanfield Primary, and Prospect Bank Primary.

In Fife all Primaries and their pupil support centres will be closed. Although all family nurture centres will operate as normal.
