Wedding rings worth over £100,000 stolen in shop raid

Dozens of wedding rings worth more than £100,000 have been stolen in a late-night raid on a shop.

The thief took the haul of 101 rings after breaking into the Beaverbrook jewellers within the Next store at the Straiton Retail Park in Loanhead, Midlothian, at about 11.10pm on Friday.

Police suspect the man fled the scene on a mountain bike and are appealing for any witnesses, as well as any other jewellers who are offered rings for sale, to come forward.

The man is described as having a medium, athletic build and at the time of the burglary he was wearing light-coloured, loose clothing, black trainers and black gloves, and was carrying a light-coloured rucksack with black trim.

Detective Constable Mandy Cummings, of Dalkeith CID, said: We are appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at the retail park at the time of this theft, particularly if they may have seen a man matching the suspect's description.

We would also ask people to be aware of anyone offering rings like these for sale, including other jewellers, and to get in touch if they have any information that could help with our inquiries.''
