Police will ban anti-social youths from nine areas across Edinburgh in the run up to and after Bonfire Night.

This is the third year dispersal zones have operated across the city.

The zones will run between 2pm and midnight on Wednesday, November 4th to Saturday, November 7th.

Anyone banned from dispersal zones in areas including Muirhouse, West Pilton, and Portobello risks being arrested if they return up to 24-hours later.

Other areas under the special measures include Saughton, Gorgie, Gilmerton, Moredun, Southhouse, and Loganlea.

Kenny Rogers from Scottish Fire and Rescue Service says call-outs are tough enough without being targeted with fireworks. He told Radio Forth: "We do have some abuse and missiles thrown at crews as well.

"It's a major concern for us. The safety of our crews is paramount, and any attack on any emergency service worker is totally unacceptable, and we'll work with police to identify those individuals. It's a small number, a minority of youths."

Speaking to Forth News, Chief Inspector David Happs added that officers are trying to get illegal fireworks off the city’s streets: "We carry out reviews and checks of where fireworks are being sold just to make sure they're being sold legally and safely, and that's something that has been carried out this year again, with the help of trading standards and crime prevention officers.

"Any attack on the emergency services is something that will absolutely not be tolerated, and we'll carry out robust enquiries that identify any persons responsible."
