A woman was airlifted from cliffs after she fell while walking along a popular coastal path in Fife.

The Anstruther lifeboat crew was called to the scene along the East Neuk chain walk just before 3pm on Thursday (28 Sept).

They found the 66-year old walker on the west side of Shell Bay, Elie, with a suspected broken shoulder.

The Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter flew her to a nearby field from where an ambulance took her to hospital.

Lifeboats stood down shortly after 5pm and returned to Anstruther.

A spokeswoman for the RNLI Anstruther lifeboat said: "The injured woman was in a difficult position for a safe extraction by lifeboat.

"It was decided to request the assistance of the Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter based at Prestwick to airlift the casualty off the cliff and onto a nearby playing field where an ambulance could transport her to hospital.

"The chain walk is enjoyed by hundreds of people each year and the dangers that accompany the route are very real.

"We advise that when enjoying this walk, please fully prepared for the rugged coastline you will encounter and if you do happen to get into difficulty, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard".
