A manhunt continues in Edinburgh after an elderly woman was attacked in her home.

It happened in Restalrig on Friday night, when 79-year-old Margaret Grant was assaulted at her home address, and later died in hospital.

Speaking from outside the property at Restalrig Circus, our senior reporter Bryan Rutherford described the scene: "Police tape lines the front of the building, laid on the hedge are floral tributes, and a police officer guards the gate to the crime scene."

Police officers are going door to door speaking to neighbours as they try to work out which direction the thug escaped.

Investigators still don't know who the man is or where he went.

Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team are treating the incident as a 'targeted attack' because the Specialist Crime Division believes the victim's name was known to the attacker.

A member of the public disturbed the violent offender who is on the run after leaving the scene of the crime on foot.

"This was a cowardly and despicable attack on a vulnerable and frail lady" - DCI Houliston

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Houliston told Forth News: "This was a cowardly and despicable attack on a vulnerable and frail lady within her home.

"It is imperative anyone with any information about what happened makes contact with us so we can find the man responsible.

"The intention of this individual was to steal from Margaret."

The suspect is described as white, aged between 20 and 30-years-old, about 5ft 6ins tall with combed long black hair and a Scottish accent.

He was wearing a black top which may have had white lower sleeves, and dark trousers.
