Edinburgh has held services to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Somme.

More than one million soldiers died or were wounded in the 141-day conflict, which was one of the bloodiest of the First World War.

At Edinburgh Castle, a service was held at the Scottish National War Memorial, with Reverend Neil Gardner of Canongate Kirk conducting the commemoration, with descendants of some of those who died at the Somme in attendance.

The Castle was then lit up red until dawn this morning.

A service was also held at St Cuthbert's Parish Church this lunchtime, to remember the the sacrifices made by soldiers from the 15th and 16th Royal Scots regiment.
