WATCH: Choose life again - Trainspotting sequel trailer released
WARNING: Contains scenes of nudity and drug use.
The trailer for the long-awaited Trainspotting sequel has been released, 20 years after the original film was in cinemas.
WARNING: Contains scenes of nudity and drug use.
The preview of T2 Trainspotting, which reunites director Danny Boyle with stars Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle and Ewen Bremner, opens with McGregor's Mark Renton returning to Edinburgh to see his friends again.
Over the strains of Underworld's hit Born Slippy, which featured prominently in the 1996 film, Renton revives his bitter choose life'' motto but with modern references -
Choose Facebook, choose Twitter, choose Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere, cares''.
He also refers to choosing reality TV, slut-shaming, revenge porn and zero-hour contracts, before saying: Choose to smother the pain with an unknown dose of an unknown drug.''
The first film, which followed a group of heroin addicts and explored urban poverty, was based on the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh, while the sequel is based on his book Porno.
In the trailer for the sequel, Renton tells his former love interest Diane Coulston, played by Kelly Macdonald, that he does not take heroin any more, but there are multiple scenes of drug use in the trailer, as well as fighting and dancing.
Renton's narration ends with: You're an addict so be addicted, just be addicted to something else. Choose the ones you love, choose your future, choose life.'' T2 Trainspotting will be released in UK cinemas on January 27.
