An Uddingston man is hoping to break world records by climbing Ben Nevis with a 100KG barbell on his shoulders.

David Dooher will scale the UK's biggest mountain on his 38th birthday in June and hopes to raise cash for a charity started by Edinburgh rugby legend Doddie Weir.

The My Name'5 Doddie Foundation works to find effective treatments for Motor Neurone Disease.

David hopes to raise cash for a cause close to his heart.

David told Forth 1: "I followed Doddie for years and always enjoyed watching him play.

"After his diagnosis, it was always very clear that he was such a strong character and he stayed positive right until the very end.

"Now I really want to do my bit to hopefully help find a cure."

David has been doing a lot of gym-based training over the last few months and will scale 3000 feet this week with 75KG on his back as a test run.

This week he will climb 3000 feet with 75KG on his back as a test.

He added: "I am working on building my overall fitness and strength just now.

"I cannot deny that it is extremely tough.

"The weight on my shoulders is important to me and it is my way of trying to showcase the struggles faced by people living with the condition and their families.

"I really feel that my training is starting to turn a corner and the hard work is paying off.

"Sometimes I have down days because there is a lot of pressure to complete this challenge too, but I do not doubt that I will get there.

"I have a really good bunch of people behind me."
