Twin Towers Demolished At Former Cockenzie Power Station

Published 26th Sep 2015

Thousands of people watched as the twin chimney stacks at the former Cockenzie Power Station in East Lothian were demolished in a controlled explosion.

The 149m-tall stacks had dominated the local skyline for the past 50 years.

The power station, which generated 150 terawatt hours of electricity every year at its peak, was decommissioned in March 2013.

Each of the chimney stacks had 150 holes drilled in it, which were then filled with explosives.

The bases of both chimneys were weakened on one side and they fell towards each other as they went down.
