Stunning footage has emerged of a TORNADO sweeping across Scotland.

The rare phenomenon was captured on camera by residents in Midlothian around 3.30pm this afternoon (Tuesday).

It follows a thunderstorm alert from the Met Office.

Lisa Millar shared a video on Twitter with the hashtag "crazy". She said: "Never seen a tornado before in Midlothian."

Pieter Steketee replied: "I'm glad you've tweeted this video, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when I saw that!"

Karla Watt also spotted it from her home in Bonnyrigg. But a gentleman seen carrying shopping in her video seemed oblivious to what was going on behind him.

Curt McCormick said: "That dude was like: 'whatever, gotta get this shopping done'."

And Andy Seagrave added: "Strap down that trampoline pronto!"

The tornado was also spotted by residents in Loanhead and Rosewell.

TV weather man Sean Batty appeared impressed. He Tweeted: "On some occasions we get funnel clouds which is the birth stage of a tornado, but they don’t reach the ground. This is one of the very rare occasions where I can say this is a tornado with a very defined tight rotation."

A Yellow weather warning remains in place for a large part of the country until 11pm tonight.
