Thousands of Scots waking up without power as Storm Eowyn clean-up begins

Amber wind warnings have been lifted across Scotland but disruption is still to be expected in the aftermath of Storm Eowyn.

Police say they were called out to 1,500 weather related incidents by 18:00 last night as 100mph winds battered the country.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews responded to around 300 similar incidents.

They say 700 calls were made to Control rooms in Johnstone, Dundee and Edinburgh as of 4pm, Friday 24 January.

At the storm's peak a gust of wind was recorded at 100.7mph in Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire and one of 102mph on the Tay Road Bridge.

SP Energy Networks issued an update around 22:00 to say it had restored power to 89,000 customers in southern and central Scotland, yet 57,000 were still in the dark.

Train services are off until at least midday as Network Rail staff clear debris blocking routes.

A Traffic Scotland update at 07:25 shows the Erskine Bridge remains closed due to "adverse weather conditions"

While at 07:20 the M80 at junction 8-9 is shut due to an earlier electrical fire.

As of 07:30 the M74 is closed Jct 12-10 northbound due to an earlier collision.

While the A78 South of Chrisswell is closed due to fallen trees.

Fire crews say they expect to remain busy today as they respond to ons, loose and unsafe structures and damage to properties from falling debris and trees.

SFRS' DCO Watt is also warning those who are experiencing power cuts to take care in the home until power is restored.

He added: “We must ask that you light, heat your home safely and that if you need to cook, you take the right precautions.

“Don’t use candles wherever possible, do not leave portable gas heaters unattended and do not attempt to use camping stoves indoors.”
