A man has died after his truck was hit by a falling tree in Aberdeenshire during Storm Arwen.

The 35-year-old's Nissan Navara pick-up truck was struck on the B977, Dyce to Hatton of Fintry Road around 5.45pm on Friday.

Emergency services attended however the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 35-year old man is the third confirmed death resulting from Storm Arwen.

It's after a head teacher died after a tree fell onto his car in Antrim, Northern Ireland and another man also died after he was hit by a falling tree in Cumbria.

Officers who responded to the incident returned to their Police Scotland van to find a tree had also fallen on it.

A photo posted on a local Facebook community page shows the front of the van to be completely crushed under the tree.

The force confirmed that no one was injured in the second incident in Hatton of Fintray.

It comes as the Met Office issued a red warning for strong winds, reaching up to 90mph. Waves as high as 10 metres were expected along the north and east coast.

The red warning stretched along the east coast from Middlesbrough to beyond Aberdeen and is the first maximum alert to be issued since Storm Dennis in February 2020.

Sergeant Craig McNeill, of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Inverurie, said: “Our thoughts are very much with the man’s family and friends at this time.

“Officers responding to this crash had parked a distance away due to weather conditions.

"On returning to their van they discovered a tree had fallen on it. No one was injured.

“Any witnesses to this crash or anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference number 2999 of 26 November.”

A full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
