A bin lorry driver has been sacked after falling asleep at the wheel and veering across a road in Edinburgh.

The council said managers took immediate action and the agency worker's contract was ended.

Nobody was hurt in the incident which is understood to have happened in Lanark Road on January 20.

A spokeswoman for Edinburgh City Council said: "When staff became aware of the incident in question it was reported to management, who took immediate action.

The individual's contract was terminated and reported to the agency.

"The council's refuse collection service always seeks to have a full complement of staff and there may be occasions, relating to issues such as illness, where it is necessary to employ agency drivers.

"All agency staff are fully qualified to carry out the job they are required to do, and are subject to the relevant license checks and driver assessments.''
