A search operation is underway for a 54-year-old man from Edinburgh who failed to return from a hiking trip to the remote Cape Wrath area in the northwest Highlands.

Mark Ryle travelled from the capital to Cape Wrath on Friday, 9 May, and was last seen around 10am on Monday, 12 May.

He’s described as 5ft 8in tall, slim build, and was wearing light-coloured trousers and a dark grey top. He was carrying a red and black backpack.

Police say Mark met various local people during his trip, but concerns were raised when he didn’t return as expected. A coordinated search involving Police Scotland, the RNLI, HM Coastguard, Assynt Mountain Rescue, and search and rescue dog teams is ongoing.

Sergeant Jo Macleod said: “Mark’s life is in Edinburgh and we’re working to trace any extended family or friends who may know more about his plans. We’re urging anyone who saw or spoke to Mark in recent days to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 1385 of Thursday, 14 May.
