Scott Brown retires from international football for second time

Scotland captain Scott Brown has announced his retirement from international football.

The former Hibs midfielder - who now plays for Celtic - earned 55 caps for Scotland since making his debut in 2005 against the USA in 2005, scoring four goals and earning himself a place in the Scotland International Roll of Honour.

Alex McLeish, Scotland national team head coach: “I would like to thank Scott for his dedication to his country throughout his career.

“I have known Scott for a long time – I gave him his first competitive Scotland cap – and I know how difficult this decision has been for him.

“Scott gave his all every time he represented his nation and his influence on the squad is immeasurable – he led by example both on and off the pitch and set the tone amongst the squad.

“He has been a shining example for the younger players in the squad and an influential figure in the dressing room.”

Alan McRae, Scottish FA President: “Since making his Scotland debut in 2005 Scott Brown has been a loyal servant to his country and we are extremely grateful to him for his service.

“Scott amassed 55 caps, earning him a place on the Scotland international Roll of Honour, and has been a key player for the team throughout his career.

“His influence in the last campaign was instrumental in the team remaining unbeaten in competitive matches in 2017 and coming within minutes of qualifying for the World Cup playoffs.

“We wish Scott all the best in his international retirement and I am sure that he will now give his all to supporting the team as they prepare for the inaugural UEFA Nations League campaign later this year.
