There are safety concerns around the Mossmoran chemical plant in Fife as more disruptive flaring gets underway.

Residents near the Cowdenbeath site were told on Saturday that five days of planned maintenance flaring would begin from Monday.

It comes after a number of periods of disruptive flaring over recent months which has lead to many complaints of loud noises, foul smells and bright lights from locals.

James Glen is from the Mossmoran Action Group. He says: "There was an issue just a week back on Friday which caused severe flaring throughout the day, so people want to know if these latest incidents are a new emergency scenario due to an ageing plant or if is old issues they are trying to resolve.

"The frequency of the events is becoming a constant headache for residents and it does give a indication that the plant is maybe no longer fit for purpose. It originally had a shelf life of 20 years, and here we 30 odd years later still operating this rickety old plant."
