A passenger threatened a taxi driver at knifepoint and fled with his valuable Rolex watch during an early morning attack.

The victim suffered a hand injury during the struggle in Edinburgh last week.

The incident happened at around 5am on Friday in Wardlaw Place, in the Gorgie area.

Police Scotland said the 55-year-old man driving the private hire car picked up a fare in Rannoch Road, Clermiston.

He took the passenger to an all-night bakery on Morrison Street before dropping him off outside a block of flats in Wardlaw Place.

The suspect then threatened the driver at knifepoint and demanded his watch, officers said.

The attacker fled with the watch, worth £7,500, following a struggle between the two men.

Officers working to trace the man responsible are asking anyone who can help identify him to come forward.

He is described as black, 5ft 8in with a medium build. He has a small beard and short dark hair shaved at the sides.

He was wearing a black Nike jacket, dark trousers and red trainers.

Detective Constable Joyce Gunderson said: In addition to the painful injury to his hand, the victim is also extremely upset at the theft of his very valuable watch and we are eager to hear from anyone who can help us trace both the suspect and the stolen item.
