Rail investigators call for louder tram horns after pedestrian death

Rail investigators are calling for louder warning horns on Edinburgh's trams following the death of a pedestrian last year.

53-year-old Carlos Palacio was killed when he was struck by a tram near Saughton tram stop in September.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) says Edinburgh Trams should increase the sound pressure levels of the horns as the current bells are not noticeable enough.

In a statement, the firms says it is modifying and testing the horns.

The report from the RAIB also stated on the day of the accident, the tram driver saw Mr Palacio approaching the crossing and applied the brake to reduce the tram's speed, as well as sounding repeated warnings using the tram's bell. But Mr Palacio continued to cross the line, leading to him being knocked down.
