The suspect stood in the middle of a road in Pumpherston to force a man to pull over.
A bare-chested attacker standing in the middle of a road forced a man to pull over and then tried to steal his car keys.
The suspect was near the refuse site on Drumshoreland Road in Pumpherston, carrying what police describe as a 'metal object'.
When the 38-year old victim stopped, he was hit in the face but after a struggle he managed to speed away towards Broxburn.
He was treated in hospital for an injury to his face following the attack at around 7.45pm on Monday (14 May).
The attacker is said to be white, 5ft 10ins tall, with a heavy build, short dark red hair, tattoos across his chest and was wearing camouflage shorts.
Detective Sergeant David Macmillan said: "This is a very unusual incident, which resulted in the victims sustaining some painful injuries to his face.
"Thankfully, he did not surrender the keys to his vehicle and was able to get away from his attacker.
"Anyone who was on Drumshoreland Road on Monday evening and saw anything suspicious is urged to contact police immediately"
