Police Seek Witnesses to City Rape

Police will today speak to motorists and passers-by in an area where a woman was raped a week ago. Officers hope that by returning to the scene of the attack in The Meadows in Edinburgh they will jog the memories of people who may have witnessed something that could assist the investigation. They will hand out copies of an e-fit image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the assault at around 7am last Saturday. A 19-year-old woman was returning from a night out when she was knocked to the ground and raped. Police Scotland said there had been an "excellent'' response from the public and detectives now believe the suspect headed south towards the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in the Sciennes area. Detective Chief Inspector Alwyn Bell said: "We will be stopping motorists in the Sylvan Place and Sciennes Road areas of the city and asking them if they were in these roads last Saturday morning. "In addition I would appeal to everyone who lives in, or was in this area, last Saturday, to cast their minds back to see if they have any recollection of seeing the man.'' The suspect is aged between 20 and 30 and wore a black beanie-style hat, dark trousers and a black tracksuit top.
