Police in the Lothians and Scottish Borders will today launch their annual campaign to keep the public safe over the festive period.

From December 1 up until 3rd January, 2016, officers will carry out additional high visibility patrols across the division providing a reassuring presence and tackling issues such as violence, antisocial behavior and hate crime.

A social media advent calendar has also been created where the public will be able to view police safety messages on both Facebook and Twitter every day from the 1st to the 25th December.

Chief Superintendent Gill Imery, Divisional Commander for the Lothians and Scottish Borders, told Forth News they are well prepared: "We do have additional officers who are specifically allocated and dedicated to our Christmas Safety Campaign, so members of the public will see more officers on patrol and there are always officers on duty. I myself and the teams on the front line will be working on Christmas day and all the public holidays. Police officers will be on duty and are available during those times. We do know that for some people Christmas can be a difficult time, Police Scotland know that and we are here to help.
