Police have confirmed that the bag which caused a bomb scare on Edinburgh's Princes Street last night posed "no threat".

Around half past five officers were called to the scene after a man was seen acting suspiciously.

They then discovered an unattended bag.

This led to the call out of the bomb disposal unit, and a large cordon being put in place - passengers at Waverly station and nearby businesses and hotels were also evacuated.

A police presence remained overnight but the route re-opened this morning.

Superintendent Arron Clinkscales said : “Around 5.30pm on Thursday, 10 November, 2022 we received a report that a bag that had been left unattended in Prince Street after a man was seen to be acting suspiciously.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were contacted and a cordon was put in place as a precaution.

“The bag was recovered and it posed no threat but we are carrying out enquiries. The cordon was subsequently lifted as soon as it was safe to do so.

“I would like to thank the public and local businesses for their patience and support while we dealt with the incident.”
