There will be a heavy police presence at Saturday's Edinburgh derby as police plead with fans to behave.

Officers will be using a range of powers to try to make sure the streets of Gorgie and the stadium are kept safe.

The call for 'responsible behaviour' comes after a string of high-profile disturbances at grounds around Scotland.

The last time Hibs played at Tynecastle former Easter Road boss Neil Lennon was hit on the head by a coin thrown by a fan.

Police say they will have a 'high visibility presence' and will be helping stewarding staff search supporters entering the stadium.

They will also be enforcing Edinburgh's alcohol by-laws meaning antisocial street drinking will not be permitted.

Any flares, alcohol and items which could cause harm if thrown are strictly forbidden from being brought inside the ground.

Anyone caught with a dangerous object won't be allowed to see the match, face arrest and a football banning order.

Match Commander, Chief Inspector Murray Starkey said: There's always a fantastic buzz in Edinburgh in the run-up to the derby, with tens of thousands heading to the match and many more watching from home.

"Ensuring the safety of all those who will attend the match is our priority, and it's essential that supporters act in a responsible manner that does not put themselves or others at risk.

“I want to ask fans from both sides of the city to act in a responsible manner and enjoy the match"
