Police are attempting to trace a man who assaulted and robbed an elderly woman in Edinburgh.

The attack happened at around 6:30pm last night (8th March) at the junction of Saughton Mains Terrace and Dania Court.

A woman in her 70's was walking when she was suddenly pushed from behind causing her to stumble and drop her shopping bags.

An unknown man then snatched her handbag, which contained a three figure sum of money, before running off along Saughton Mains Terrace in the direction of Stenhouse Street West.

The woman was uninjured.

The suspect is described as white, in his 20’s, around 5ft 8 tall with an athletic build. At the time of the attack he wore a light grey hooded top with the hood up, dark coloured trousers and white trainers.

Detective Sergeant Martin Smith of Corstorphine CID said: “This was a mindless attack against a defenceless woman who fortunately was not injured.

“I ask anyone who was in the area of Saughton Mains Terrace around the time of this incident and who remembers any suspicious behaviour to contact police immediately.

“Prior to the attack itself we believe the suspect had been in Stenhouse Drive standing at the foot of the steps leading to the tram track so again I’d be interested to hear from those who remember seeing him.”
