Police are hunting a man after a knife attack in Edinburgh City Centre on Saturday night.

A 23-year-old man was cutting through St Cuthbert's Cemetery just off Lothian Road when he was punched to the ground and threatened with a knife.

The attacker then tried to steal his rucksack.

The victim suffered a large wound on his face and a number of smaller cuts to his hand.

Detective Sergeant Mark Lumsden from Gaysfield CID said: "A full investigation is now underway to identify and apprehend the male responsible."

"While these enquiries are conducted, uniformed officers will provide a high-visibility presence in the area to speak to members of the public."

"If you remember seeing any suspicious activity in the area around the St Cuthbert's Cemetery late on Saturday evening, then please contact police immediately."
