A man is in a critical condition in hospital following a collision with a car in East Lothian last night.

The 39-year-old was crossing Monktonhall Terrace in Musselburgh at around 6.50pm, when he was hit by a southbound Volkswagen Golf.

He suffered a serious head injury and is being treated at the city's Western General Hospital.

Police said he remains in a 'critical condition'.

The road was closed for around three hours while officers carried out inquiries and police are now appealing for witnesses.

Sergeant Gary Taylor, from the road policing unit at Dalkeith, said: 'As part of our inquiries we are eager to speak with any other motorists or pedestrians who were on Monktonhall Terrace at 6.50pm on Thursday evening and who witnessed this collision. I would ask that anyone who believes they have information relevant to this incident to contact police immediately.'
