A 91-year-old driver who was arrested and charged over an Edinburgh car crash - which led to the death of a toddler - has died before the case reached court.

Three-year-old Xander Irvine was hit by a car which mounted the pavement on Morningside Road on June 30 last year, while out walking with his mum.

She was taken to hospital and later released, but he died as a result of his injuries.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has now confirmed the case has now closed following the death of the woman who was behind the wheel of the red Kia that day.

Tributes to Xander Irvine

Hundreds of mourners, residents and business owners lined the street around the scene of the crash site last summer as Xander's funeral procession made its way past.

In a statement released by the family at the time, they said: "Xander Paul Thomas Irvine, three years old, was out for a walk in Morningside with his mother on Tuesday afternoon when a tragic accident occurred.

"Xander was a very happy, bubbly, intelligent little boy who was very dearly loved by his parents Victoria and Paul.

"Xander was a real chatterbox who just loved books, playing with all sorts of vehicles and his Lego.

"Victoria and Paul are devastated and feel as if their hearts have been ripped out.

"Xander will be so very sorely missed by them both and all his family and friends in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

"What will we do without you, Xander?"
