A search is continuing for two missing fishermen after their boat overturned at sea, resulting in the death of another crew member.

Police Scotland said a search effort was going on to try to find Jason Buchan, 35, and David Stead, 47, both from East Wemyss, Fife.

They are missing after their boat overturned in the Firth of Forth on Monday.

The coastguard launched a search off the coast of East Wemyss, after being alerted by someone on the shore shortly before 5pm.

It was stood down as darkness fell but resumed on Tuesday morning, with local lifeboats searching the coastline.

One man, understood to be 30-year-old Birrell Stewart, was recovered from the water on Monday about a mile from the coast and was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but later died, Police Scotland said.

The boat involved, a 10ft-long fishing vessel, was also recovered in the East Wemyss area.

Lifeboats from Anstruther and Kinghorn were involved in the initial search, as well as the Rescue 131 RAF helicopter from Boulmer and three coastguard teams from Kinghorn, Leven and St Andrews.

Police said officers were in contact with the families of the missing men.

Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale local area commander for Levenmouth said: "Tragically this incident has resulted in the death of one local fisherman, with two of his friends still missing.

"We have been working closely with colleagues from the coastguard as well as volunteer lifeboat personnel and I would like to thank our partners for all of their assistance and support.

"My thoughts are with the friends and family of all of the fisherman, and with the local community at this time. We will look to provide further updates on our ongoing inquiry once we have more information.''
