People in Penicuik have been left stunned after being hit by an EARTHQUAKE.

A 2.5 magnitude tremor was detected in the former Midlothian mining town just after 10am this morning (Monday).

The British Geological Survey says some locals reported their homes shaking as well as 'a muffled thump'.

Commenting on a local community page, Karen Briggs said: "I actually thought something had crashed into side of my house."

Chris Hollingsworth added: "Yup! I thought someone had kicked the back door down! Huge thud and a whoosh!"

And Jackie Grees said: "I thought it was my neighbour downstairs, but he isn't in. What a fright I got."

It's not the first time tremors have been recorded in the region.

There were two 2.3 magnitude earthquakes in Penicuik in November and December 2007.
