Mid-air emergency: German football team diverts to Edinburgh Airport
Last updated 9th Sep 2021
A plane carrying the German national football team has diverted to Edinburgh Airport after declaring a mid-air emergency.
The Boeing 737 had taken off from Reykjavik in Iceland and was heading towards Frankfurt at the time of the diversion.
Exactly what happened is unclear but our senior reporter Bryan Rutherford said: "This happened around 5am this morning.
"The team landed at Edinburgh Airport for safety checks as a precaution.
"They described the situation as 'very calm' and appear to have stayed on board while waiting for a replacement flight to carry on to Frankfurt.
"The delegation took off from the runway and left the Scottish capital shortly before midday and reported arriving in Frankfurt just before 3pm.
